Is your Sunscreen Toxic?

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that 97% of Americans are contaminated with a common sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone. This toxic chemical has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage, as well as low birth weight in babies whose mothers are exposed during pregnancy.

Oxybenzone (also known as benzophenone-3) is a penetration enhancer, a chemical that helps other chemicals penetrate the skin. Although oxybenzone is most common in sunscreen, manufacturers also use the chemical in many other personal care products.

The FDA does not require UVA filters in sunscreens, and most manufacturers have never included them in their formulations. However, because of consumer demand and awareness, the number of sunscreens that block harmful UVA radiation more than doubled between summer 2008 and 2009, according to Environmental Working Group's (EWG) analysis.

More Americans than ever are using sunscreen to protect from sunburn and guard against skin cancer. Top choices include products with high SPF ratings, and that are waterproof or that advertise "broad spectrum" protection. Most people trust that the claims on the bottle will ensure that the product truly protects their health and their families', but this is just not the case.

SUNDURANCE™ Sunscreen is a new and revolutionary way to apply sunscreen to the skin through advanced Micro-Encapsulation Technology (MLT™). Scientists have succeeded in wrapping molecules of protective sunscreen chemicals in a microscopic silicate molecule. The molecule is so small that it is invisible to the naked eye, cannot be felt on the skin, and does not create sheen on the skin. When applied to the skin, these micro-molecules form a complete shield of protection on top of the skin while still allowing the skin to breathe.

The result is a sunscreen formula where the chemicals do not touch the skin, are not carcinogenic, and do not cause irritations. Most sunscreens without MLT use chemicals that are applied and absorbed directly into your skin. Virtually all of these chemicals have been demonstrated to have some level of toxicity to the skin. Due to this toxicity concern, it is not recommended that these types of skincare products be used on infants or on sensitive skin. These types of products may also demonstrate a strong chemical odor, and can even cause increased free radicals and oxidation damage to your skin.
