Calcium is Critical for Maintaining Good Health

If you are 30 or older, you are losing it every day

Calcium is vital for bone health.  Both women and men will begin to lose 0.5-1% of their bone density or degree of bone mineralization per year starting around the age of 30. In women, the rate of loss will spike to 2-3% per year for the first 3 to 15 years following menopause.

Calcium is critical in all diets. Of all the minerals required by our bodies, calcium is the most prevalent.  The average adult body is comprised of 1.25 Kg (almost 3 pounds) of calcium.

Not only is calcium an integral part of the teeth and bones, where 99% of the calcium in the body is found, but it also helps the body:

  • form blood clots at the site of a wound
  • aids in muscle and nerve function
  • regulate blood pressure, required for normal heart beat
  • cellular structure
  • release certain hormones
  • many enzyme reactions

Calcium is present in high amounts in a wide variety of foods, although most people get the majority of their calcium from just one group of foods - dairy products, and in particular, cow’s milk. As calcium often works alongside magnesium, it is useful to obtain calcium from sources that also include magnesium. This is not the case for milk.

In fact, calcium and magnesium work so closely together that, if there is an excess of one in the body, it will often lead to a reduction in the other, disturbing the natural balance. In addition to the presence of magnesium, it is beneficial that many of the other sources of calcium, such as seeds and nuts also contain essential fatty acids, which are also required for healthy brain, nerve, hormone and immune systems.  Calcium is also closely associated with and its absorption is dependent on Vitamin D.

According to the National Institute of Health, most people do not get enough calcium in their daily diet. Supplements are suggested as an alternative to meet their daily required intake.

The most commonly used form of calcium is calcium carbonate, which is often derived from limestone or oyster shells.  This form of calcium is poorly absorbed and is often contaminated with poisonous lead.

Study reveals that many Americans are not getting enough calcium

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH CALCIUM? THE SECRET TO BONE HEALTH...

The May, 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association published the conclusion of researchers at Yale University and the University of Connecticut that many older Americans have an insufficient intake of calcium. Adequate intake of the mineral has been defined by the Institute of Medicine as 1,000 milligrams per day for adults and 1,200 milligrams per day for those over 50.

Calcium and vitamin D are the cornerstone of osteoporosis prevention, yet they are not the whole story. Other minerals and nutrients that are vital to healthy bones include magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B12, and others, including zinc, manganese, boron, copper, and silicon (Nieves JW 2005; Hirota T et al 2005).

Many studies have shown that calcium can reduce bone loss and suppress bone turnover. Calcium requires the presence of vitamin D for maximum absorption.

Although calcium is readily available in dairy products and other dietary sources, many Americans are calcium deficient. Here are a few possible explanations for calcium deficiencies:

  • Decreased vitamin D availability, possibly due to kidney or liver problems or insufficient exposure to sunshine
  • Decreased gastrointestinal tract absorption due to stomach or intestinal problems
  • Increased loss of calcium from the kidneys, colon and bowels
  • Low dietary calcium intake
  • Medications that inhibit calcium absorption

There are many forms of calcium on the market., calcium malate is an excellent source of bio-available calcium (absorbed by the body) and a good way to receive supplemental calcium.
